How the counts on Native Refuge's plant cards are made 1. From the list, keep the moths and butterflies marked native and established in California that have host-plant records. 2. Count them by the plant genus their caterpillars are recorded on. 3. Each plant counts the species recorded on its genus, including records filed under that genus's other names (for example, Agropyron and Leymus records count for the wildryes, now Elymus). A species recorded under two of those names is counted once, so a card's number can be lower than the sum of the names' counts in the second file. 4. Where the list's own references name a particular plant under an older genus, those records are added for that plant. 5. A small number of insect-plant pairs found on review not to be real host records are left out, and six plants the list does not cover keep a count from Calscape.
